Rated by About.com as one of the Top 10 Best Pedometers

Quickflip™ GuidesThe Omron HJ-112 counts steps, measures calories burned, and calculates distance walked. It also tracks aerobic steps separately when walking or jogging more than 60 steps per minute or more than 10 minutes continuously. This top-rated pedometer has a 7-day memory, great for when you want to easily keep track of your progress from day-to-day. It is completely silent — no clicking or rattling like other brands. It comes with a security strap to ensure you don’t lose it.

Recent studies show people who use pedometers generally stick with their exercise program longer than individuals who don’t use them. Additionally, in a study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, a lifestyle program of diet plus activity was shown to offer similar health benefits and be a “suitable alternative to diet plus vigorous activity for overweight individuals.” Now that’s good news! Participants in the “lifestyle” program simply increased the levels of physical activity by about 30 minutes, five days a week, and lost weight. Participants were taught to incorporate short bouts of activity using pedometers into their daily schedules.

“The average person accumulates 3,000 to 5,000 steps per day," says David Bassett Jr., professor of health and exercise science at the University of Tennessee – Knoxville. The goal is to increase your steps per day to 10,000, equivalent to about 5 miles for men, 4 miles for women.

A Harvard Alumni Study showed that even walking just 1 mile a day, equivalent to about 2,000 steps for men, 2400 steps for women, reduced death rates. The greatest benefit occurred with 6,000 steps per day, or 2½ to 3 miles. For most people, that is equivalent to a 45-minute walk. These steps can be accumulated steps throughout the day, too. For optimal weight management, aim for 10,000 steps per day most days of the week.
