About HIPAA

HIPAA — the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 — was passed by Congress in order to protect an individual's privacy and confidential records.

HIPAA allows persons to immediately qualify for comparable health insurance when they change employers, mandates the use of standards for electronic exchange of health care data, and requires use of a national identification system.

HIPAA covers a number of important health care issues, by which health care professionals and entities must abide.
